To begin, try to play your trip ahead of time and don’t set yourself any specific dates until it’s time for you to book your reservations. In England, Scotland and Ireland, the breakfast usually comes with the room, so don’t rush off to a restaurant. Most everywhere else you will have to pay a little more for a small continental breakfast.

Talk to your travel agent about cutting out the unnecessary luxuries, what type of accommodations you would find for friends visiting, would you be looking for a four star hotel with every amenity? You would probably suggest visitors to stay at a clean, respectable hotel with a reasonable rate; just such hotels are abundant virtually everywhere.

Another thing to think about ahead of time is shopping. Talk to your agent about any items you are interested in purchasing abroad and he could provide information on locations where your items could be obtained at the least cost. You will be able to locate duty-free shops virtually anywhere you travel; these shops offer near unbeatable prices. Be careful not to load up excessively; you will have to pay a duty on your great finds if you exceed certain amounts. Mailing your items back to the United States is a method many people use to avoid problems with customs officials. It’s perfectly legal to send as many packages home as you want. However, hold on to your receipts handy since customs may need to check them.

Just remember that it’s imperative to plan in advance. I am of the opinion that you just cannot do too much reading before setting off on your trip. With the knowledge you acquire of your destinations you’ll be able to be prepared once the time comes to take off on your trip.
