Medicare Supplement Comparison Shopping – Avoid Being Overcharged

Written By: Richard Cantu on January 23, 2010 No Comment

It is very important to spend some time comparison shopping for your Medicare supplemental insurance policy. Why? Well, at risk of preaching to the choir, you need to do this so that you can be sure not to be overcharged for a supplement policy that you could receive for less from a different insurance company.

Some people tend to automatically trust the first Medicare supplement quote that they are given and enroll with that company right away. This is a mistake; for, by doing this, those people may not receive the best rate they can. Additionally, they perpetuate the unfortunate practice of insurance companies overcharging on their Medigap policies and unduly profiting.

Many falsely assume that since the government standardizes the supplement plans that prices are also standardized. However, that’s far from the truth. Private insurance companies charge different prices for the standardized plans, and it is on your shoulders to do your research to find the best deal that you can for the plan that you desire.

Insurance companies are able to charge whatever premium they choose for a Medicare supplement plan based upon their own policies for rate setting. Some companies base their premium price calculations on fair market value, but many companies just toss out a big number in hopes that people will pay it. And, unfortunately, in many cases, people do pay it!

People’s ignorance concerning the price differences in Medigap plans allows insurance companies to get away with overcharging their clients and unduly profiting from their loss. Stop this practice by shopping around for your supplement and getting as many quotes as you need to find one you like and can afford.

If we all take time to comparison shop for Medicare supplemental coverage, insurance companies willl no longer be able to rip off their customers.

Think about it…. Do you really want to spend your retirement years living on a fixed income (as most retirees do) and pay more than you should for Medicare supplement insurance if you don’t have to? The chances are good that you actually want the opposite, but don’t know (or didn’t know) that you had a choice in the matter.

Fortunately, by receiving many price quotes from different brokers and insurance companies you can find the best deal for you and spend your hard-earned money on the more fun things in life.

You may not always end up with the cheapest policy, but you will be able to get affordable coverage and the customer service you deserve.

Stop overpaying for your Medigap insurance. Start rate shopping early so that you can ensure that you have received a fair deal.
