Making Sense Of All Those Cables Behind The Entertainment Center

Written By: Jason Thomas on December 1, 2009 No Comment

Have you ever looked at all of those cables that are a big tangled mess, and yet somehow connect all of your entertainment center components together? Do you know what any of them do, or even if you are using the right cable for the job? Don’t worry, if you answered no to either of these questions you are not alone. It feels like we are soon going to reach the point where you need an engineering degree in order to get your TV to work properly.

First thing you have to look at is what kinds of components you have and how they all fit together. These days almost everything is considered high definition, so you have to plan accordingly. Television, plasma, LCD and DLP’s all have HDMI inputs that are required for a high definition quality. If you have cable, it needs to be HD and the box must be hooked into the television via an HDMI cable. Otherwise the picture is not true HD.

If you have a Blu-ray player than this will also require an HDMI cable, to connect to your HDTV and your surround sound system. Again, without an HDMI cable you will not be experiencing a true high definition picture or sound, which is the whole point of purchasing all of the high definition components. If you are not using HDMI cables you should check your set top box, HDTV, surround sound system and Blu-ray player to see if the components are HDMI compatible, in order to determine how many HDMI cables you need. Replacing your old audio/video component cables with HDMI cables is a great way to start making sense of all of those cables.

If you are connecting a high definition set top box and a Blu-ray player to your HDTV you should check to see how many HDMI input ports your HDTV has. Most HDTV’s contain two or four ports, so you should be ok, but it is better to check before you spend money on an HDMI cable you may not be able to use. If you do not have a high definition set top box, or a Blu-ray player, then the traditional audio/video component cables should be sufficient for connecting your components.

Also, the newer players upscale the DVD to near high definition quality. The only way to get a real high definition picture is by having an HD television and a Blu-ray player hooked together with an HDMI cable. True 1080p is a wonderful way to enjoy a movie with the family and friends. There is no better way to enjoy a movie than to see it the way it was intended to be seen. There really are some great ways to enjoy family entertainment at home on your own home theater and it is mostly accessible to anybody.
