During the end of the year, most insurance plans start to come to a close. The old plan will still be finished and a new plan will be put in it’s place. With this often comes higher premiums and less coverage, at least this seems to be the norm for the beginning of 2010. Before automatically renewing your medical coverage, why not take some time to investigate and research other insurance plans and premiums to see if you can save some money by switching to another company or coverage plan.

One option you have would be to purchase your new insurance policy through your spouse, should this be available. If your spouse is employed and the employer offers medical coverage, you may find that it is less expensive to purchase that plan, then continue with the coverage you have. If your spouses insurance is no less expensive, then another option may be to purchase individual plans from each of your employers. Since employers tend to cover a larger percentage of medical for their own employees this may be the most cost effective solution. No matter how you decide to cover yourself, you should always comparison shop to be sure you are getting the best rate possible.

Most companies have decided to offer their employees high deductible policies, as these have lower premiums. There are even companies that were about to keep the premium cost for their employees the same, by changing the deductible amounts on their insurance plans. When these plans are afford, however, they are usually accompanied by a Health Savings Account. This accounts allows you to deposit tax free fund that you can then use for your medical expenses.

Another option is to look at individual plans. Family coverage through an employer will cost the same premium regardless of how many children are in the family. If you, however, only have one child, you might want to shop for a separate policy for him. Two individual policies could result in a cost savings for you. Although employer sponsored group health insurance policies are often available at excellent rates, there are circumstances when this is not true.

A smart employee will take the time to research available health insurance plans to be certain that they are making a wise choice. This is extremely important in these times when almost everyone is struggling to make ends meet while still providing the best of everything for their families.
