These individuals are experienced at shopping for new policies and often shop around each year as their policy is coming up for renewal. Many others have been covered through their employers for their entire lives. The employers often contribute to the health insurance premiums and extend the policies to include the employee’s family members at the employee’s expense. The employer is paying a large portion of your premium, while extending the availability of his group discount to your family members.

Employers generally offer two different types of plans for their workers. One usually is a Health Maintenance Organization plan, or an HMO, and the other is most likely Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO. The prices of each plan vary greatly, with the HMO usually being the least expensive. These plans renew annually and are subject to change, in cost and coverage, at the end of the term year.

Since providing health coverage for their employees is a large expense, business tend to shop around each year and compare policies offered by other insurance companies. Often times the employers decide to reduce the amount that they are paying into their employees premiums, however others are try to keep the premiums the same by increasing deductible or out of pocket expenses for the insured.

Many companies today, especially many smaller ones, find they are no longer able to offer health insurance as a benefit to their employees. Our lawmakers are trying to persuade employers to continue offering health insurance by giving tax incentives to those who provide this assistance. The specific new laws governing this situation have not yet been passed, so it will remain to be seen what support our government will supply to small businesses in an effort to gain their backing for this plan.
