Nearly every family goes through that stage when their children are ready to learn to drive. It is a happy time, a scary time and potentially an expensive time, as the family auto insurance rates are sure to be increased once a teenage driver takes the wheel.

Accident statistics show that teenagers are involved in a much greater number of accidents than older drivers. They often lack the practice, experience and critical thinking skill needed to successfully drive while avoiding accidents.Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to help our teen change these numbers.

Practice and simulation are key elements in successful drivers training. Let your teen learn basic operating skills in an open lot where there is little risk of damage. Set up simulated traffic situations and let you teen practice the appropriate way to turn, back up, and avoid traffic hazards.

Make sure that your teen gets all the proper instruction. Even if your school teaches driver’s ed, supplemental private sector courses can help train your teen and can count in your favor when your insurance company sets your new rates.Simulators allow your teen to experience, at least theoretically, traffic problems and hazards that they are not likely to encounter in their on road practice sessions. It has been demonstrated that the skills acquired on a simulator will help your teen react correctly when encountering a similar situation in real life.

Spend time with your teen on the road. When you are driving, let you teen know what you are looking out for and why you do what you do to avoid accidents. When your teen is driving, gently point out potential dangers that need to be in his consciousness for proper safety.By making sure that your teen has the best and most comprehensive training that you can, you help them to become a safer, more courteous driver. You will benefit from this as well when the insurance company calculates your new rates.
